As in ancient times, September 1st marks the beginning of the church year in the Orthodox Church. As the previous church year draws to a close in August, various feasts of conclusion are celebrated, such as the Falling-Asleep of the Virgin Mary (Aug. 15) and the Beheading of St. John the Baptist (Aug. 29). With the coming of the new liturgical year, we pivot towards the Mystery of the Incarnation as we celebrate the Nativity of the Virgin Mary (Sep. 8) and the Feast of the Exaltation of the Cross (Sep. 14). September is also the time of year when we recommit ourselves to Christian Education. In particular, on Sunday, Sep. 13, we launch our 2015-2016 Sunday School Program. The St. Athanasius Church School begins at 9am each Sunday. We invite adults and children to participate in our age-appropriate groups. Visitors are always welcome!
