Snowy Weekend update

The great Commonwealth of Kentucky appears to be poised to be hit hard by a winter storm on the weekend of January 24-25. The effects will linger for days as we dig out from the snow. We have canceled all services at our outlying chapels (St. Nina Mission in Berea & Mercer County Chapel at the home of Fr. David & Matushka Karen Thatcher.) We do plan two services at St. Athanasius this weekend:

  • 630pm Saturday Cathedral Vigil followed by Confessions
  • 930am Sunday Liturgy followed only by a short Coffee Hour

Note that the full Fellowship Hour team system is suspended this weekend — so that no one is obliged to make the drive simply due to a team commitment. Also, note that youth group and any other planned events scheduled at the church (outside of these two services) are canceled at least through Tuesday, January 27. We do have a plan for salting and plowing the church parking lot and main entrance, but parishioners need to use discretion in deciding to come or to simply pray from home. We do have two options for praying from home:

  • Watching the Livestream of our two services using our YouTube channel here. (We encourage everyone to subsribe, regardless. You can enjoy, for instance, this week’s Adult Sunday School class, recorded this past Thursday.)
  • Praying the Lay Vespers and Sunday Morning Typika Services combining each of those fixed services with these variable texts. (These instructions from Fr. Justin offer some practical clarity on how to chant Lay Vespers.)

Our google calendar reflects our regularly-updated plans (so check it as you have questions about what may be happening in the coming days.) May the Lord bless you all as you make wise decisions for your households about how to worship this weekend. Here are some snowy photos of our church from years past:

December & our Lord’s Nativity

December 6, 2025 Featured

As we head deeper into December, the themes of Christmas are gradually growing stronger! Orthodox Christians are currently marking the Nativity Fast, which ends on Christmas Day, December 25: You can see how we mark all these days liturgically — building up to Christmas — with services …

Final updates as we head into the snowstorm are available on the parish website, linked below, where you will find info on options for prayers at home and other recommendations about coming to services (or not.) While we are pleased to serve Vespers & Liturgy this weekend in Nicholasville, we ask everyone to exercise discretion as this situation develops. May the Lord protect us and our Commonwealth as the snow falls!
