Worship: the Heartbeat of our Lives

May 13, 2009 Featured

In the Gospels, it is written that all of the teachings of the Law and the Prophets can be hung on two broad commandments: loving God with all our heart, mind, and soul and loving our neighbor as ourselves.  Too often, in our day, Christians seek to fulfill “love” by merely being “busy.”  Ours is a culture that produces “things” and so we seek to produce love by our familiar means of “production.”  And so, we often run around like chickens with our heads cut off.  And yet the words of the Scriptures still call out to us: “Be still and know that I am God.”

As part of our ongoing attempt to put first things first and to grow up into Christ who is our head, our parish continues to seek to embrace the Cross of deeper and more regular worship times.  As part of this process of allowing ourselves to be formed and molded by worshiping the Lord, we have added two regular weekly services: Matins every Wednesday and Friday mornings at 7am.  The addition of these services each week is especially important since Wednesdays and Fridays are days devoted to fasting and prayer in the Orthodox Church.

The St. Athanasius weekly schedule now includes (as a minimum):

Saturday evening: All-Night Vigil (6:30-8pm)

Sunday morning: Divine Liturgy (10am-12noon)

Wednesday morning: Matins (7-7:55am)

Wednesday evening: Vespers (6:30-7:15pm)

Friday morning: Matins (7-7:55am)

We also serve the 12 Great Feasts and other lesser feasts as appointed.  Please see our service schedule in the sidebar for more detailed information on these additional services.
