January, Epiphany, & Houseblessings

At the end of December, the Church marked the Great Feast of the Lord’s Incarnation According to the Flesh (Christmas.) The centerpiece of January is the Great Feast that follows 12 days after Nativity–the Great Feast of the Lord’s Appearing (called Epiphany or Theophany,) when our Lord is baptized and inaugurates his earthly Ministry.

Highlights of January in our parish include the Epiphany services, the Great Blessing of Waters (both indoors on Jan. 6 and outdoors on Jan. 11,) the annual Blessing of Homes by our clergy (the Houseblessing Info & Sign-up Page is here,) the resumption of Sunday School on Jan. 18, and a season of special classes getting us ready for Lent in March. Check our full online calendar here. Our hard-copy calendar for January can be found below:

We invite you to visit our daughter community, St. Nina Mission Church in Berea, which helps extend the reach of the Orthodox Faith along the I-75 corridor & Wilderness Trail. St. Nina Chapel is drawing people from Somerset, London, Corbin, and beyond. The chapel is now serving services twice a week on Tuesdays (630pm) and Saturdays (630pm.) We are also serving at least two Sunday Liturgies per month in Berea. Fr. David Thatcher is “running point” for new contacts in Berea and can be reached at fr.david@bluegrassorthodox.org.

You can also attend our Mercer County Chapel, which meets for Vespers & Dinner the 1st and 3rd Saturdays of the month at 430pm at the home of Fr. David Thatcher (482 E. Lexington St., Harrodsburg, KY.)

Below is a collection of photos from December 2025 showing the full range of our parish life. We hope these photos inspire you to visit our church or one of our chapels. If you have questions about our calendar or any aspect of our Faith or parish life, please reach out to our associate pastor Fr. Giorgi Lomsadze at fr.giorgi@bluegrassorthodox.org.

+An End-of Year Word from Fr. Justin+

To our dear Faithful & Friends, Christ is Born!

I wanted to take this opportunity of the last day of the Christmas Feast -- and the last day of 2025 -- to thank you for being a part of our community. I speak not only for myself but for all three of the priests who serve here -- we feel incredibly blessed to serve St. Athanasius and the missionary endeavors already flowing from our mother church. It's a great honor and joy.

As we enter the New Year, I am encouraged that we have welcomed over two dozen people into the life of Christ at St. Athanasius and St. Nina in 2025. I am encouraged to see cradle-born native sons and daughters of our parish maturing into faithful adults, despite (or because of) the winding road of life. I am encouraged to see many unchurched young people (and older people) finding a home in our Orthodox Christian "bluegrass" communities. I am also encouraged as I see long-time members struggle through life, but keep trying to maintain faithfulness to Christ in the midst of health problems and financial difficulties. That "unshowy" faithfulness (that often looks like spiritual failure) is actually key to our spiritual life.

Thank you for your tithes and offerings this year. Thank you to those who have been faithful to meet all or part of your pledge for the Forward in Faith Campaign (that has helped us to bring Fr. David and Fr. Giorgi and their beloved families to Kentucky.) We are wrapping up this campaign in the first part of 2026 and pivoting to one of the secondary goals of the campaign -- to begin the process of gathering information for building our final temple here at 100 Lime Lane. The process will not be quick or hasty -- and will take several years, to be sure -- but the process is beginning as we start 2026. (Mark you calendars for Wednesday night after Vespers, January 28 -- when we have our first open meeting about the process that lies ahead of us!)

If anybody wishes to complete their gifts for Forward in Faith or make a one-time gift (or to give to the St. Athanasius general fund or to St. Nina's work) one last time in 2025 -- please give below at the link and note the category you want to support.

May the Lord bless us all as we say farewell to Christmas, enter the New Year, and prepare for the Glorious Season of Epiphany! yours in the Lord, Archpriest Justin Patterson, Rector
