Dormition Season & Open Church

August 1, 2020 Featured

As we journey into August, we mark the days of the Dormition Fast (Aug. 1-14) which precedes the Great Feast of the Dormition on Aug. 15. In this unnerving year of 2020, perhaps more than any other year, we truly need these days of purposeful prayer, fasting, and penance. Our parish calendar has …

Towards Our Reopening!

May 9, 2020 Featured

Christ is Risen! While Christ the Eternal Pascha is Ever-Present with us, many of our people have been understabably grieved at not being able to participate in the Sacraments and in common worship, in person. We are pleased to announce the following: On Monday, May 11: St. Athanasius parish reopens …

Paschaltide in an Unusual Season

May 2, 2020 Featured

While Pascha 2020 will (hopefully) stand out as a unique one in the story of our lives, we rejoice that Pascha has come and that Christ is Risen! As in every year, the Paschal season continues for 40 days (on this year, until May 28th.) As our country begins to open up from the Coronovirus …

Resources to Pray Holy Week at Home

April 9, 2020 Featured

For most Orthodox Christians, observing Holy Week and Pascha lies at the core of their piety as believers. Normally, our common work of praying these services together is full of great joy and consolation. This year, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, St. Athanasius is only able to livestream services …

Doing Lent in the Shadow of Coronavirus

March 18, 2020 Featured

Last Friday, our parish shared the painful news that–in light of the novel Coronavirus’ proliferation–we would be asking our brothers and sisters to refrain from attending divine services, in accordance with instruction from our archbishop. At the time, most of us–including …

A Lent None Of Us Expected

March 14, 2020 Featured

A Pastoral Word from Fr. Justin Patterson: With the spread of the Coronavirus COVID-19, our churches have had to make excruciatingly difficult decisions about what faithfulness looks like. After much prayer and careful consideration, our Archbishop Alexander has instructed his diocesan communities …

Getting Ready for Great Lent

February 10, 2020 Featured

In the Orthodox Church, Great Lent (which begins this year on Monday, March 2) is preceded by four weeks of preparation. This season of preparation touches upon what we eat but even more upon our hymns and appointed readings–all of which call us back to God and prepare us for deep repentance. One of …

Our Journey to Nativity 2019

November 14, 2019 Featured

Each year, from November 15 until December 24, the Orthodox Church observes the Nativity Fast. This fasting season has been established by our Church since ancient times for the purpose of preparing our hearts to welcome the Light of Christ at Christmas. Fasting seasons are not only times of …

Taste & See that the Lord is Good!

March 19, 2019 Featured

Our Journey to Pascha 2019 We are now deep into Great Lent, the ancient 40-day season specially appointed for renewed spiritual focus in anticipation of Holy Week and Pascha (Easter.) During the Lenten season (known as also as The Great Fast or The 40-Days,) Orthodox Christians give great care not …

Houseblessing Season 2019

January 9, 2019 Featured

In the month of January, the Orthodox Church observes the Great Feast of Theophany, or Epiphany. One of the special features of Epiphany is the blessing of homes. Because our parishioners in America are often scattered across many counties (rather than residing in one village,) the season often …
