2008 Series Theme: Encountering

the Kingdom, Part 1 of 4

7:30pm, Wednesday, September 24

(Childcare provided)

For our first installation of our 2008 Fall Lecture Series, we welcome Architect Thomas Smith, a long-term member of St. Michael’s Orthodox Church in Louisville. Thomas is an associate of the noted Kentucky-based architectural firm Sherman-Carter-Barnhart and has nurtured a deep interest in the architectural tradition of the Eastern Orthodox Church over his many years in the Church. He has successfully designed and completed St. George Chapel of St. Michael Orthodox Church in Louisville. Thomas has also completed designs for the monastic church and campus of Holy Cross Monastery in West Virgina. In his lecture, Thomas will explain why the conventions of Orthodox architecture are not merely “preferences” but are in fact connected to the very way in which Orthodox Christians “encounter the Kingdom.”

Stay tuned for more information on both this lecture and others that will follow throughout the fall. Our second lecture, on Orthodox Worship as an Encounter of the Kingdom, will be offered on Wednesday, October 15 by Reader Gregory Ealy, choir director of the Holy Trinity Orthodox Cathedral in Chicago.
